How to read a teleprompter while looking at the camera

The farther the script is from the lens, the more visible the glance. Moving the teleprompter helps find a reading position without altering your face.

How do you read without looking far away from the camera?

Place the teleprompter close to the camera lens, use a comfortable text size and shorten long sentences. Record one paragraph and review your eye movement in the finished video. An on-screen prompter helps with reading position; it cannot guarantee continuous eye contact or automatically correct the direction of your gaze.

Locate the lens, not your preview

It is easy to watch your own face while recording. The viewer experiences that differently from an eyeline toward the lens. Locate the physical camera first, then find a comfortable nearby position for the script. With a built-in laptop camera, that is often near the top of the display; an external camera may need a different arrangement.

The goal is not to stare rigidly at one point. Preserve the sense of addressing the viewer while allowing natural eye movement. You might deliver an opening near the lens and then visibly refer to the material while explaining a chart. A convincing explanation does not require every frame to show an identical gaze.

What makes reading noticeable

VariableCheckPractical adjustment
Script positionDistance from the lensMove the panel
Visible line lengthWidth of eye travelAdjust font size
Camera heightDownward-looking postureRaise the device securely
Sentence complexityRepeated returns to the startSplit the construction
PaceSearching for the next wordReduce the speed

Do not change everything simultaneously. Record a paragraph, move the text, and repeat it. If the change helps, keep that position and adjust the next variable. This produces a setup you can reproduce instead of a lucky take whose conditions you cannot remember.

Position the Takt prompter

Move the panel near the camera while leaving its controls accessible. Choose a font readable from your normal seated position, then play a short passage. If you lean forward to decipher a word, improve readability before filming rather than moving your face toward the screen during the recording.

Check long words and transitions between lines. One-word mode can narrow the reading area but gives less advance context for a sentence. If expression becomes flat, return to scrolling and simplify the script. Do not sacrifice an understandable explanation merely to minimize movement of the eyes.

A two-version exercise

Say: “I’ll show you one way to prepare your next presentation.” Explain the idea in two more sentences. Read the first take from your usual script position and the second from a panel near the lens. Watch without sound to compare the eyeline, then listen to assess delivery.

If the difference is small, check line width and the habit of looking at your preview. You may begin near the lens and then monitor your face for the rest of the sentence. Once framing is ready, reduce those repeated appearance checks and leave more attention for the message. Repeat with a familiar passage so wording does not dominate the exercise.

Understand the limit of script placement

Takt does not alter the eyes or apply AI face processing. Moving the script can help during capture, but it cannot repair an earlier take. If the issue appears after filming, the choices are a retake or a separate processing tool. Choose according to the stage of work rather than a broad “eye contact” label.

Do I need a physical mirror teleprompter?

For a short browser video, try an on-screen setup first. A mirror prompter involves a separate camera and equipment arrangement. It may suit regular studio filming, but one unsuccessful laptop recording is not enough to establish that you need it. Improve the script and positioning before changing the entire setup.
